Sjögren syndrome

What is Sjögren's Syndrome ?  

Sjögren syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body’s white blood cells attack the exocrine glands such as salivary and lacrimal glands. This results in the destruction of the glands and lymphocytic infiltration of the glands.


Cause(s) :  
  • Presence of family history suggests genetic component involved
  • Hormonal factors such as esterogen and androgen
  • Lymphoid cells of offspring circulating in maternal blood
  • Viral proteins
Symptoms :  Main symptoms:
  • Dryness of eyes
  • Dry mouth, making it difficult to swallow or speak
  • Swollen salivary glands
  • Persistent dry cough
Associated symptoms, depending on the area affected:
  • Joint pain, swelling and stiffness
  • Skin rashes or dry skin
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Prolonged fatigue
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Blood tests
  • Eye examination and tests
  • Sialogram
  • Salivary scintigraphy
  • Biopsy
