Potassium wasting syndrome

What is Bartter's Syndrome ?  

Defect in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle in the kidney, which is responsible for absorption of potassium back to the blood. This results in low potassium levels (hypokalemia), increased blood pH and normal to low blood pressure.


Cause(s) :  
  • Genetic defect
Symptoms :  
  • Kidney stone
  • Frequent urination
  • Hypotension (Low blood pressure)
  • Growth failure
  • Muscle weakness
  • Muscle cramping
  • Constipation
  • Dehydration
  • In Type IV Bartter syndrome - sensorineural deafness due to imbalance of sodium-potassium
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Blood test (levels of hormones renin and aldosterone)
  • Urine test (levels of potassium, calcium and chloride)
  • Biopsy of kidney
