What is Sheehan's Syndrome ?  

Decreased functioning of the pituitary gland due to ischemic necrosis due to lack of blood supply during and after childbirth.


Cause(s) :  Sheehan’s syndrome is a rare complication of pregnancy, occurring after excessive blood loss.

Symptoms :  
  • Absences of lactation
  • Cessation of menstrual cycle or very light menstruation
  • Hypothyroidism with tiredness
  • Intolerance to cold
  • Constipation
  • Weight gain and hair loss
  • Slow heart rate and low blood pressure
  • Gonadotropin deficiency leading to amenorrhea, hot flushes and decreased libido
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Medical history and clinical examination
  • Blood tests
  • Pituitary hormone stimulation test
  • Imaging tests (of pituitary gland)
