What is Ortner's syndrome ?  

Ortner’s syndrome refers to recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy from cardiovascular disease.


Cause(s) :  
  • Dilated left atrium due to mitral stenosis
  • Increased blood pressure in the pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein or other blood vessels that supply the lungs
  • Aberrant subclavian artery (abnormal anatomy of the subclavian artery)
  • Enlarged pulmonary artery
  • Aneurysm in thoracic aorta
Symptoms :  
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Electrocardiogram
  • Angiogram
  • Ultrasound of the heart and thoracic cavity
