What is Stein-leventhal Syndrome ?  

A range of symptoms presenting as a result of hormonal imbalance of female sex hormones in women.


Cause(s) :  
  • Genetic component is suspected
  • Metabolic factor
Symptoms :  
  • Not getting periods after having one normal cycle during puberty
  • Irregular periods
  • Extra hair growing on the chest, belly, face and around nipples
  • Acne on face, chest and back
  • Dark or thick markings on skin
  • Creases around the armpits, groin, neck and breasts
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Swollen ovaries
  • Enlargement of clitoris
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Blood tests to check for levels of hormones in blood such as:
    • Follicle stimulating hormone
    • Estrogen
    • Leutinizing hormone
    • Testosterone
  • Vaginal ultrasound
  • Pelvic laproscopy
