What is Plummer-vinson Syndrome ?  

Plummer-Vinson syndrome is a condition in which a combination of difficulty in swallowing, iron deficiency anemia and esophageal webs (thin membranes of esophageal tissue consisting of mucosa and submucosa that can partially protrude or obstruct the esophagus).


Cause(s) :  
  • Genetic factors
  • Nutritional deficiencies
Symptoms :  
  • Dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing)
  • Painful swallowing (odynophagia)
  • Burning sensation in the tongue and oral mucosa
  • Angular stomatitis (inflammation of the corners of the mouth)
  • Atrophy of the lingual papillae (atrophic glossitis)
  • Esophagus web seen in endoscopy
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Radiography of gastrointestinal tract
  • Blood tests for anemia
  • Biopsy of mucose
