What is Kartagener's Syndrome ?  

Autosomal recessive genetic disorder that causes a defect in the action of the cilia lining the respiratory tract, fallopian tube and flagella of sperm cells.


Cause(s) :  Genetics.

Symptoms :  
  • Chronic upper and lower respiratory tract infections due to ineffective mucociliary mechanism.
  • Wet cough with unexplained respiratory distress
  • Improper drainage of sinonasal system - congestion, rhinorrhea, chronic middle ear effusions
  • Purulent otorrhea (ear discharge)
  • Sterility in male due to immotile spermatozoa
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Visualization of ciliary ultrastructure
  • High-speed videomicroscopy to observe ciliary beats
  • Nasal nitric oxide measurement
  • Mucociliary clearance
  • Immunofluorescent analysis
  • Chest X Ray
  • CT
