What is Behcets Syndrome ?  

Behcet’s syndrome is characterized by inflammation in blood vessels throughout the body, with seemingly unrelated symptoms.


Cause(s) :  Causes of Behcet’s Syndrome is unknown. Auto-inflammation of the blood vessels could be a possible cause.

Symptoms :  
  • Mouth sores
  • Skin rashes and lesions
  • Eye inflammation
  • Genital Sores
  • Uveitis (Uvea is a part of the eye that consists of the Iris, Choroid and Ciliary body)
  • Optic atrophy
  • Arthralgia (joint pain) and non-erosive oligoarthritis
  • Lungs - Pleuritis, nodules, consolidations, cavities and ground glass lesions
  • Inflammation in veins and arteries causing redness, pain and swelling in arms or legs
  • Confusion, seizures and memory loss due to lesions in the brainstem, basal ganglia.
Diagnosis and Tests :  
  • Positive pathergy test:
  • Eye check up
  • Checking Genital sores
There is no specific test to diagnose Behcet's syndrome. It is diagnosed based on certain signs and symptoms. Specialist to consult :  Cardiology
