J E
Hospice (Hospitium = Guest house) is a palliative care treatment given by a team of specially trained physicians, volunteers and family members to terminally ill patient to give them a quality life before death. Hospice care does not hasten or decreases the death time but gives a quality death to the suffering person, where treatment cure has no effect. Physicians give a professional medical care to treat the symptoms and give emotional and mental support to the patient and their family members before and after the patients death. The first modern Hospice care, St. Christophers Hospice was started by Dr. Cicely Saunders near London in 1960. In India the first hospice care Shanti Avenda was started in Mumbai in 1988 and Jeevodaya was the first hospice centre started in Chennai in 1990. Burgundy Pin is used to create awareness to the public the benefits of Hospice care, which provides a symptomatic treatment to provide a quality life.
