Effect of Smoking on Lifespan

Smoking significantly influences an individual's longevity as a key lifestyle factor. Numerous scientific studies consistently indicate that smoking shortens life expectancy. While cigar or pipe smoking also impacts lifespan, its effect is generally less severe compared to cigarette smoking. Here are some supporting evidences:
  1. In a USA study it was found that heavy smokers have lower life expectancies than persons with all other smoking statuses; indeed, compared to never smokers, heavy smokers at age 25 can expect at least a 25% shorter life ().
  2. In a UK study who stopped smoking at age of 60, 50, 40, or 30 years gained, respectively, about 3, 6, 9, or 10 years of life expectancy ().
  3. In a Netherlands study it was found that average cigarette smoking reduced the total life expectancy by 6.8 years, whereas heavy cigarette smoking reduced the total life expectancy by 8.8 years. The number of total life‐years lost due to cigar or pipe smoking was 4.7 years().
  4. In the same Netherlands study men who stopped smoking at age 40 gained 4.6 life‐years, compared with men who continued smoking at that age while the gained life‐years were 2.5–3.3 years among men who stopped smoking at age 50, 60 or 70 years().
