Incidence of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL)
Caucasians are more likely to be affected by Non Hodgkins Lymphoma than Blacks or Asians.
- Â Young males are more likely to get the disease than young females, but this difference minimizes as the age increases.
- Â The Caucasian population is 50% more afflicted with the disease than Blacks, Hispanics and Asians.
- Â A higher incidence of NHL is seen in the industrialized nations rather than in the developing countries. The United States and Canada present with the greatest incidence, which is 40 -50,000 new cases per year.
- Â Childhood cancer is a rarity, especially the NHL variety. However it has been observed that NHL is the third most common cancer among children, accounting for 6 percent of pediatric cancers. Childhood NHL closely resembles Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and the treatment regimen for both these maladies are the same.
- Â People over the age of 65 years are more affected than those below 65 years.
The incidence is-
- Â 8.5 per 100,000 people for <65 years
- Â 68.8 per 100,000 people for >65 years of age
8-27% the NHLs currently diagnosed are HIV/AIDS -related.
- Children affected by AIDS are ten times more likely to develop the disease campared to AIDS -affected adults.
