Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma - Incidence

Incidence of Non Hodgkins Lymphoma (NHL)

Caucasians are more likely to be affected by Non Hodgkins Lymphoma than Blacks or Asians.

  •  Young males are more likely to get the disease than young females, but this difference minimizes as the age increases.
  •  The Caucasian population is 50% more afflicted with the disease than Blacks, Hispanics and Asians.
  •  A higher incidence of NHL is seen in the industrialized nations rather than in the developing countries. The United States and Canada present with the greatest incidence, which is 40 -50,000 new cases per year.
  •  Childhood cancer is a rarity, especially the NHL variety. However it has been observed that NHL is the third most common cancer among children, accounting for 6 percent of pediatric cancers. Childhood NHL closely resembles Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) and the treatment regimen for both these maladies are the same.
  •  People over the age of 65 years are more affected than those below 65 years.

The incidence is-

  •  8.5 per 100,000 people for <65 years
  •  68.8 per 100,000 people for >65 years of age

8-27% the NHLs currently diagnosed are HIV/AIDS -related.

  • Children affected by AIDS are ten times more likely to develop the disease campared to AIDS -affected adults.

I was not aware that the NHL can arise in the brain. I thought that the brain area was a priviledged site, an area that is in no contact with our immune system [blood and lymphatics]. Please explain further.

Frequent use of phenoxyacetic acid herbicides, in particular, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, has been associated with 2- to 8-fold increases of NHL in studies conducted in Sweden, Kansas, Nebraska, Canada, and elsewhere.
