Vaginal Bleeding - Ovulating Women

Ovulating Women

Heavy menstrual bleeding or Menorrhagia is seen in 10% of ovulating women. This can occur due to the following reasons:-

  • Endometrial polyps
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Adenomyosis
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Blood clotting disorders
  • Intrauterine devices (IUD)
  • Certain medications
  • Endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer (women > 40 years)

Menorrhagia can give rise to severe cramps and can lead to anemia, fatigue, dizziness and fainting attacks due to low hemoglobin which can be highly distressing. To rule out the above causes of bleeding, a thorough evaluation is required. It can includes investigations such as ultrasound – abdominal and trans-vaginal, Hormonal profile, thyroid function tests, clotting parameters. Sometimes PAP smear, an endometrial biopsy or dilatation and curettage with biopsy of the endometrial material. All this is done mostly to rule out the possibility of cancer.

In some women with dysfunctional uterine bleeding no definite cause can be found however appropriate treatment can effectively control the bleeding.

I am a 39 year old female. In my early to mid 20's I never bled from intercourse and my lover as very well-endowed. Intercourse never hurt and was very pleasurable and never bled during sex ever nor did I bleed after. Now at age 39 I have a new lover who is very well-endowed, but I have heavy bleeding during and after intercourse. I have no pain and no discomfort at all. Intercourse with my new lover is amazing and wonderful. So I ask, why am I having this bleeding during and after intercourse? I do have a history in these last 10 years of uterine fibroids in which I had a uterine ablation done 8 years ago. And I have always suffered from very heavy, painful, clotty mensus cycles. I have a GYN appt next month. Could my fibroid issue be a factor now at age 39?
