Why is Amoxicillin and Bromhexine Prescribed? (Indications)

This combination medication contains penicillin antibiotic and mucolytic agent. It is prescribed for upper and lower respiratory tract infections such as bacterial pneumonia, lung abscess, acute and chronic bronchitis, sinusitis, lung abscess, bronchiectasis and diseases like bronchial asthma and obstructive airway disease whose course is complicated by infections.

Contraindicated in patients with history of penicillin allergy and lactation.

What is the dosage of Amoxicillin and Bromhexine?

Adult: PO- Each capsule contains amoxicillin 250 mg and bromhexine 8 mg: 1-2 capsule 8 hourly, up to 48 hours.
Liquid 5 ml contains amoxicillin 125 mg and bromhexine 4 mg. Over 5 years: 10ml 8 hourly. Under 5 years: 2.5-5ml 8 hourly. Duration as for adults.
