Self care Gargle with warm saline or salt water (1 teaspoon in a glass of water). Use a cool-mist vaporizer or humidifier in the room where you spend the most time. Avoid acidic drinks , cigarette smoke or spicy food. Paracetamol or paracetamol syrup (e.g. Calpol) can relieve symptoms. Soothing lozenges can help by keeping the mouth and throat moist and more comfortable. Sometimes ice cream can help. If your throat is very painful, confine yourself to fluids, including milkshakes and soups. A cold pack should be applied to the throat at two-hourly interval during the day. The throat may be gargled several times daily with lemon juice. Gargle made from the fenugreek seeds is very effective in severe cases. Medication Pain-killers: Take paracetamol or aspirin for pain relief. Antibiotics: Penicillin and erythromycin is usually chosen if the patient is not allergic to it or if the patient has fever. Any course of antibiotics prescribed should be completed. In the rare cases of an abscess forming around the tonsils, this is treated by draining it either by a needle and syringe or by incision - cutting it with a scalpel and allowing the pus to drain. Tonsillectomy, or surgical removal of the tonsils, is usually performed only as a last resort. Tonsillectomy is performed under a general anaesthetic and the tonsils are removed from the wall of the throat, and the blood vessels attached to them are tied off. |
