Australia’s Weight Problem

 Australia’s Weight Problem
Australia faces its biggest health challenge in obesity, as a research concludes that only a quarter of the people would be within a healthy weight range by the year 2025.
Professor Paul Zimmet, director emeritus of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and member of the Preventative Health Taskforce on Obesity, Tobacco and Alcohol, states that it is not merely an issue of diet, since other factors like urbanization and food access play a vital role.

Helen Walls, a research fellow at Monash University, states, "The evidence generally shows that individual-based strategies aren't going to work. Educating people about good nutrition and the importance of physical activity isn't generally effective…”

Better urban planning, access to the right foods, maternal nutrition, and a more willing response from the government, are some of the recommendations made by Professor Zimmet.

“It's quite a paradox that we're one of the top sporting nations in the world yet we're ranking in the top five or six nations for obesity," he remarks.
