Madurai based Aravind Eye Cares System has bagged the prestigious Antonio Champalimaud Vision Award for creating a system that fights back blindness and vision hilliness.
The one-million-Euro annual award honours outstanding contributions in research in vision and associated areas, and has helped in providing major breakthroughs in the understanding of vision and in the alleviation of visual impairment and blindness.Portuguese President, Aníbal Cavaco Silva will give away the award here on Friday to the Board members of the institute.
The Indian eye-care system began its work in 1976, and up to 2005, the institute helped 19.5 million of people, and made more than 2.5 million surgeries.
The institute consists of a centre for manufacturing synthetic lenses, sutures, and some eye pharmaceuticals. It also provides training, research, and has an international eye bank.
The António Champalimaud Vision Award is the biggest global award in the field of ophthalmology.
