Chronic Myeloid Leukemia - Incidence

Incidence

Chronic Myeloid leukemia affects 1-2 persons per 100,000.It affects people of all ages, although it is common among the middle-aged and the elderly.

Chronic myelocytic leukemia affects less than 200,000 people in the US population and hence it has been listed as a " rare disease” by the Office of Rare Diseases (ORD), of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In the Western population, 15-20% of adult leukemia is represented by CML.

It occurs in 1-2 persons per 100,000 and affects people of all ages, although it is common among the middle-aged and the elderly. It may affect children too. It is slightly more common among men than in women.

In India the incidence seems to be lower than the westen countries however in selected regions of the country like Manipur, Mizoram and regions in the south west coast – Goa, Udipi, Thrissur, the incidence is higher than other parts.
