When and How to Take Metronidazole

  • Metronidazole is available in the form of a tablet, an extended-release tablet, and as a capsule to be taken orally (by mouth).
  • Capsules can be taken with or without food. If the medication upsets your stomach, it is best to take it with a meal.
  • The extended-release tablet should be taken without food, at least 1 hour before or after a meal.
  • Swallow this tablet as a whole instead of crushing, chewing or breaking it.
