Why is Trifluopromazine Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an antipsychotic agent, prescribed for nausea and vomiting and psychoses.  It blocks dopaminergic neurotransmission in brain.

When should Trifluopromazine not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with preexisting CNS depression, coma, bone marrow depression, blood dyscrasias, 1st trimester pregnancy and hypersensitivity.

What is the dosage of Trifluopromazine?

Adult: IV- Nausea and vomiting: The recommended dose is 1 mg/dose. Max: 3 mg/day.
IM- Psychoses: The recommended dose is 60-150 mg/day.

How should Trifluopromazine be taken?

It comes as a solution for injection to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein or muscle.

What are the warnings and precautions for Trifluopromazine?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of heart disease, epilepsy, increased eye pressure, Parkinson's disease, myasthenia gravis, benign prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes, severe kidney and liver disease, any allergy, who are taking other medications, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

• It may cause blurred vision, do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

• Avoid using this medication prior to myelography or post-procedure with metrizamide to control nausea and vomiting.

What are the side effects of Trifluopromazine?

Blurred vision, dry mouth, urinary hesitancy/retention, constipation, low blood pressure, allergic rash, inner restlessness, movement disorder, muscle weakness, loss of appetite and sleeplessness.
