Children in Oz Have Regular Dental Check-Ups

A new study has revealed that children in Australia regularly visit their dentists even if they do not actually enjoy the procedure.

An Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report.says that almost 80% of Aussie children reported seeing their dentist in the last year.

"From 1994 to 2005, approximately 80 per cent of children aged five to 11 years visited a dentist within the previous 12 months," the report said.

Professor John Spencer, of the AIHW's Dental Statistics and Research Unit, expressed happiness at these findings and said children benefitted from these visits as it helped dentists detect oral disease early. "Cost is not a substantial barrier to children visiting a dentist because of free or heavily subsidised School dental services in most states and territories," he added.

The report said that the findings were similar in children aged 12-17 years as well.
