Piles / Hemorrhoids – FAQs

FAQs

1. Which expert doctor should I consult if I have been diagnosed to have Piles?

Consult a general surgeon as he or she will advise you if you need surgery.

2. Can my piles be treated by laser surgery?

Yes, some doctors do use laser to remove the piles. The advantage is that the laser beam can be directed precisely at the pile mass and no normal tissue is removed.

3. Are piles different from fissures?

A fissure literally means a crack or tear of the tissue. The lining tissue of the anus may tear due to trauma caused by a hard stool. A fissure may also cause pain and bleeding. An examination by a doctor will clinch the diagnosis.

4. What is a sentinel pile?

A tag of skin may sometimes be present near a fissure-it is called a sentinel pile. It is not a hemorrhoid like the common piles.

5. Is it true that using an Indian type of closet prevents the formation of piles?

Yes, there has been some research on this matter, though it has not been conclusively proven that using an Indian closet reduces chances of forming piles. It is also thought that prolonged sitting on a western closet during defecation contributes to the formation of piles.
