Diet for Uric Acid Stones

Diet for Uric Acid Stones

Uric acid stone former should avoid animal sources of protein and red wine and increase their daily fluid intake.

If you are a uric acid stone former, avoid animal sources of protein, which tend to acidify the urine. Food rich in uric acid includesmeats, sweet breads and sardines.

Eat protein foods in moderation, as even vegetable sources of protein (e.g. pulses and grains) are urine acidifiers. Be sure to consult a doctor about minimum daily requirements of protein for a person of your age, gender, overall health condition, and body-weight.

Pure Uric acid stones can also be dissolved by increasing the daily fluid intake and making the urine alkaline. The recommended fluid intake is about 2.5 liters to 3 liters a day. The color of the urine should be pale white and not yellow – as this means that your fluid intake is adequate. Do remember that drugs such as multi-vitamins can make the urine appear yellow even if you are drinking enough water.

Usually potassium citrate solutions are prescribed by the doctor to be taken three or four times daily mixed with some water.

Some vegetables such as sprouts may also increase the uric acid level in the blood.

Good article, kidney stones are very painful, most of them are build up of calcium oxalate. They are usually a result of poor diets that may contain to much animal protein, bad fats, excess sodium, etc. try and stay away from proceed foods. Most of the time it requires a diet change.
