Symptoms
Symptoms of hyperventilation usually lasts for 15 to 30 minutes. Hyperventilation can cause the following symptoms although it is not mandatory that all of them occur.
- Numbness / tingling in the lips, hands and feet
- Lightheadedness / feeling faint / dizziness
- Headache
- Chest pain
- Slurred speech
- Loss of conciousness
People with hyperventilation syndrome suffer from chest, stomach, nervous system and emotional complaints.
The abdominal complaints include-
- BloatingĀ
- Burping
- Passing excess gas
- Feeling of pressure in the abdominal region
Some nervous system complaints include-
- Numbness/headaches/nerve irritability
- Dizziness/ fainting
- Hot, cold sensations / feeling of chilliness
- Intolerance of bright light / noise
- Auditory/visual disturbances
- Twitching eyelids
- Spasms/ cramps of the fingers/hands
- Anxiety
- EEG abnormalities
Emotional / Psychological complaints include-
- Confusion / feeling agitated / anxiety / irritability
- Lack of concentration
- A feeling of being outside yourself / depersonalization
- Hallucination
- Phobias
- Obsession
- Feeling of Inadequacy
- Panic attacks / depression
- Anorexia
Respiratory symptoms-
- Feeling as if you can't breathe
- Chest tightness / choking / chest pain
- Shortness of breath / dyspnea
- Palpitations
- Sighing / yawning
- Irritable cough
- Asthma
