You should consult a urologist for insertion of artificial urinary sphincter.

2. Should the artificial urinary sphincter be offered to the patient for urinary incontinence soon after prostate surgery?

Artificial urinary sphincter should be offered to the patient only after the patient has tried out pelvic floor exercises, and medications to treat the incontinence for at least 6 to 12 months. In many cases, the patient recovers with these measures and the artificial sphincter may not be needed.

3. Can the device be inserted through a laparoscopic approach?

Though the device is usually put in place through open surgery, laparoscopic approach has also been used for the same.

4. Can the device be deactivated?

Yes, a button for deactivation is present on the control pump of the device.

5. Would I need to use pads even after surgical procedure?

Sometimes it may take a few weeks to be fully dry and a small urinary pad maybe required.
