Zeta-Jones Says She Hopes to Remove Stigma from Depression

In celebrity news, Catherine Zeta-Jones has said that she hopes her confession that she had been diagnosed with and treated for bipolar II disorder will encourage millions of sufferers to wipe away the "shame" associated with the condition and seek treatment.

The 41-year-old Oscar-winner released a statement on Wednesday, saying she believed patients with mental illnesses were wrongly stigmatised.

"This is a disorder that affects millions of people and I am one of them," the Daily Express quoted her as telling a magazine.

"If my revelation of having bipolar II has encouraged one person to seek help, then it is worth it. There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help," she added.

Zeta-Jones was treated for five days earlier in April at the Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut, after developing the illness under the stress of her husband Michael Douglas's recent battle with throat cancer.

The 66-year-old actor was given the all-clear in January.

But Catherine - who has two children, son Dylan, 10, and daughter Carys, eight, with Michael - was still experiencing the effects of depression.
