Doctors at Andhra hospital strike work

Doctors at the government-run King George Hospital in this Andhra Pradesh coastal city Monday struck work to protest their colleagues being attacked by relatives of a patient.

Medical services at the biggest hospital in the coastal region came to a standstill as doctors and other medical staff struck work to demand the arrest of those involved in the attack and proper protection to employees.

Three doctors, including the chief medical officer, were Sunday roughed up by relatives of a patient, who died due to alleged negligence of the hospital staff. The other doctors and hospital employees had to run for their lives.

"How can we carry out our duties without protection," asked a woman doctor as the employees held a demonstration in front of the hospital building.

Patients were put to severe inconvenience and dozens could be seen lying on the ground outside the hospital building with no doctor to attend to them.
