Researchers Discover Graphitic Carbon in the Lubricating Layer on Hip Implants
Those suffering advanced stages of arthritis often need hip replacement surgery. The challenge in such surgeries is that the implants have short lifetimes and thus may need more surgeries.
Now researchers at Northwestern University, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, and the University of Duisburg-Essen Germany have come out with the idea that graphitic carbon appears to be the main ingredient in the lubricating layer which forms around the implants.

This may hold a clue for implant designers to develop longer lasting devices which can take advantage of the graphitic carbon lubricant.
