French researchers have used scanning electron microscopy and powder neutron diffraction analysis to assess the texture of cystine kidney stones, which are a characteristic of the genetic disease cystinuria. Cystinuria has a variety of treatment options, but choosing a right drug is a nightmare for physicians. Hence, Dominique Bazin, Director of Research at Université Paris-Sud 11, France (now at LCMCP-College de France), and co-workers used crystallographic techniques to understand how different treatments affect the stones.
The researchers also revealed that following the prescribed regimen also plays a vital role in the disease outcomes.
The study details appear in Journal of Applied Crystallography.
