A new research study reported in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism states that the Pill does not make women more prone to heart attacks. The study involved 1,800 women aged 16 to 44 and compared them to women not using birth control. It discovered that pills containing only progestin, and not estrogen posed no risks. It was estrogen the hormone long used in contraceptive pills that was connected to heart attacks in the past. Micronor and Ovrette, that contain only progestin and other progestin-only birth control items were concluded to be safe. Combination pills with both progestin and estrogen, though popular, do not give the assurance of safety.
Hence, although only two out of a million healthy women in 30s suffer from a heart attack, Dr. Genevieve Plu-Bureau who headed the study advises women who smoke or who have a history of high blood pressure to use the progestin-only products.
