Merck Launches Contraceptive Implant Nexplanon in the US
Merck unveiled its long term contraceptive implant, Nexplanon in the United States after the device was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration as a method of preventing unwanted pregnancies.
The Nexplanon is a small sized implant similar to a matchstick that is implanted under the skin in the upper arm. Merck said that the implant provided protection against unwanted pregnancies for up to three years and can be fitted through a minor procedure.

The company revealed that tests have shown the implant to prevent pregnancies in 99 out of 100 women for one year.

The Nexplanon comes with progestin etonogestrel which prevents pregnancies through ovulation inhibition, cervical mucus thickening, and alterations in the endometrium.
