Members of the expert committee on preventing crimes against women and children visited Fortis hospital in Bengaluru, following a complaint that a male attendant had molested a 54-year-old dengue patient.
The chairman of the committee, //V S Ugrappa, said, “It should be made mandatory that all hospitals conduct background checks before inducting employees.”

Shivakumar (35), a male nurse at the hospital, allegedly touched the woman inappropriately on the pretext of conducting medical checks. The incident took place on October 5, but it came to light only on October 30. Shivakumar was arrested after the complaint filed by the woman’s husband.

Ugrappa said the hospital management had dismissed the accused, Shivakumar, from service. It has also come to light that the accused had also worked in a government hospital for five years.

Health Minister U T Khader said that he had asked the committee to look into the issue and submit a report.
