According to Ellen Bialystok, a psychology professor at York University in Toronto, increased proficiency in languages translates into good mental health.

During the study, Ellen studied 450 Alzheimer's patients with similar levels of impairment. Half of the patients were bilingual and the rest had spoken only one language all their lives.

The study revealed that there were positive benefits of speaking two languages. For instance, the bilingual patients were diagnosed with Alzheimer's 4 or 5 years after the diagnosis of monolingual patients.

Though, speaking two languages may not protect against Alzheimer's, it can delay its onset.
