The study analyzed 321 older couples aged 56 to 89 years, harmonizing data from three intensive daily-life studies conducted in Canada and Germany. On average, couples reported being together and feeling positive emotions about 38% of the time. During those shared positive moments, both partners’ cortisol levels were significantly lower compared to when they were apart or not sharing the same emotional experience. Even after adjusting for variables such as age, medication, relationship satisfaction, and each person’s individual mood, the link between shared emotions and lower cortisol remained strong. The researchers also found that this calming effect lasted over time.
