A new hospital which is to be built on the site of Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital is given a green signal. The plans for this new £600m super hospital for the West Midlands have already been announced. It is funded by a private finance initiative.

A spokeswoman for the University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust said the trust's finances had been stable for 11 years and the development was viable.

The Treasury has also approved the scheme and said that it was affordable.

Julie Moore, the trust's chief operations director, said that the new hospital would provide 21st Century health care for patients.

Edgbaston MP Gisela Stuart said that the facility is mainly intended to provide a state-of-the-art unit and better care for psychiatric patients.
