Around 200,000 women become the victim of gender violence in Madrid every year, a study has revealed.

8.9 percent were victims of psychological abuse, 2.4 percent were victims of physical violence and 1.1 percent were abused sexually.
"In view of the results, 48,000 women in the Community of Madrid had suffered gender-related physical violence during the year before the study, with 150,000 having experienced psychological violence," researcher Maria Durban, of the UC3M Statistics Department said.
Another finding of the study is that psychological violence is less in women aged between 25 and 39 and more frequent among separated or divorced women.
Around 2,000 women were interviewed by telephone. The women were between 18 and 70 years old and had lived in the Community of Madrid during the previous year, and had a partner or had been in contact with their former partner in the previous year.
The study was published in the European Journal of Public Health.
