Doctor in India Arrested For Conducting Illegal Sex Determination Test And Abortions

A special team was assigned to confirm the complaints imposed on the doctor about conducting sex determination test and fetal abortions in a private clinic.

A doctor and a middleman were arrested for allegedly conducting a sex determination test at a private ultrasound center in Yamunanagar, Chandigarh, India.

The teams assigned for a joint operation launched by district administrations of Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Yamunanagar in Haryana seized an unauthorized portable ultrasound machine, a laptop and other equipment.

About Ultrasound
Ultrasound scan or sonogram uses sound waves to obtain images of the internal organs. Ultrasound scan is used during pregnancy and to examine breast, abdomen, renal and thyroid.

The doctor identified as Shakeel conducts sex determination tests at an ultrasound center in Yamunanagar and Amit Kumar worked at a private clinic at Sarsawa in Uttar Pradesh brings patients to the doctor for test.

Yamunanagar Deputy Commissioner, S S Phuliya had received complaints about the illegal tests and abortions being carried out. To verify the complaints, Phuliya constituted a team and sent a decoy patient to clinic in Sarsawa (near Yamunanagar) where Amit Kumar asked for Rs 10,000 to conduct sex determination test and for aborting the fetus.

The team tracked the process and arrested them. Yamunanagar district administration is keeping a vigil on ultrasound centers in adjacent areas and those found indulging in illegal practices would invite stern action.
