Cuban scientists have said they are readying for clinical trial a new AIDS vaccine that has shown encouraging results on animals.
Eduardo Martinez, director of the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Centre at Havana, told reporters Sunday that the safety of the therapeutic vaccine has already been tested on animals and has shown no adverse indications. It is expected to improve treatment of AIDS patients whether used singly or in combination with retroviral drugs, most of which are produced in Cuba, he said.
Martinez said the results gained from the laboratory experiments of the vaccine and its trial on animals will be presented at the forthcoming Havana 2007 Biotechnology Congress.
