Scalp Itching - Symptom Evaluation - FAQs

Q: Which doctor should I visit in case I suffer from itching of the scalp?

A: You should visit a skin specialist or a dermatologist in case you suffer from itching of the scalp.

Q: How can lice infestation be treated?

A: Lice infestation is treated using medications that contain pyrethrins or permethrins. Recently, a medication containing ivermectin has also been approved by the FDA for the treatment of lice. The patient’s clothes and bed linen should be washed with hot water. Combs and hair brushes should be well cleaned. The furniture of the house should also be vacuumed to remove any lice around the house.

Q: How can I know if I am suffering from a fungal infection of the scalp?

A: Your doctor will usually be able to diagnose a fungal infection of the scalp on examining the scalp. He may scrape out a few flakes and examine them under a microscope or a magnifying glass. In some cases, if the diagnosis is doubtful, he may take a biopsy of the lesion.

I was diagnosed have Iodine allergy 40 years ago. By reducing salt in food and ingestion of seafood I've been able to reduce the problem considerably. When I feel severe itching in my scalp it coincides with a relaxed diet, thus the itch. Severe itching causes thick, large skin dandruff and will itch and cause me to scratch to the point of bleeding. It takes weeks to reduce the itch to a confortable status but it never dissapears.

i have maddening itchy scalp. My dermatologist finds nothing, skin is clear, no visible symptoms. The cause is allergy. Some relief is thusly found in anti-allergents like Benadryl. But only for 6 hours and it causes sleepiness so daytime use is risky. And what I am allergic to is a mistery. Karel
