Bone marrow Aspiration and biopsy is the removal of some bone marrow tissue, which is then examined under the microscope to look for abnormal cells, or may also be tested in other ways.

Bone marrow is the tissue present inside long bones, and is responsible for producing different types of blood cells. As it is present inside the bones the surface area makes it one of the most widely distributed organs in the human body. It contains stem cells, the base for producing red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and other blood components.

A bone marrow biopsy can determine whether an individual’s bone marrow is healthy and making normal amounts of blood cells. Therefore, it is used to diagnose and monitor blood and marrow diseases, including some cancers.

The pelvic bone is the most common site for obtaining a bone marrow biopsy sample. However, the sample can also be collected from the sternum (breast bone) or the lower leg bone.

Rarely complications like excessive bleeding, infection, and increased pain at the site of biopsy can occur.
