Prevention
Veterinary doctors, meat processing plant workers, sheep and dairy workers, livestock farmers, and researchers at facilities housing sheep are at increased risk of getting Q Fever.
- Cleanliness is a must. Other preventive measures include:
- Education about the disease
- Appropriate disposal of placenta, birth products, fetal membranes, and aborted fetuses at facilities housing sheep and goats
- Restricted access to research facilities housing sheep
- Pasteurized milk and milk products
- Quarantine imported animals
- Counsel persons at highest risk for developing chronic Q
A vaccine is currently available in Australia.
