Paralytic poliomyelitis

A severe form that occurs in less than 1% of polio cases resulting in paralysis. Although, early signs of improvement can be observed, 5 to 10 days later, there is recurrence of fever. Paralysis begins and progresses for 2 to 3 days. But, if the body temperature returns to normal, paralysis does not progress.

The symptoms for paralytic poliomyelitis are the same as nonparalytic and abortive poliomyelitis. In addition, the following symptoms may also ocur:

  •  Muscle weakness and paralysis
  •  Loss of reflexes
  •  Bladder paralysis
  •  Weakened breathing
  •  Difficulty in swallowing
  •  Flushed or blotchy skin
  •  Hoarse voice
