What type of drug is Alteplase?

Alteplase is a tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) produced using recombinant DNA technology. It is used as a thrombolytic or fibrinolytic agent to dissolve blood clots.

Does Alteplase increase the risk of bleeding?

Bleeding is the most common risk of using alteplase , and can be fatal. If serious bleeding occurs, contact your physician immediately. They might discontinue alteplase therapy and provide supportive care.

How is Alteplase administered?

Alteplase is available as an injection (lyophilized powder), which is administered intravenously . However, it may be administered directly into the catheter for catheter clearance.

Is Alteplase effective for catheter clearance?

Catheter obstruction is a complication associated with the long-term use of central venous catheters (CVC). Alteplase is safe and effective in clearing a central venous catheter occlusion .

Who should not take Alteplase?

Patients who have recently experienced a stroke, internal bleeding, haemorrhage, head trauma, or intracranial or intraspinal surgery in the last three months are advised not to take alteplase. Those who currently have severe, uncontrolled hypertension, are advised against alteplase as well.
