Signs and symptoms of food poisoning may include one or more of the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Fever
  • Dehydration
  • Weakness that may lead to respiratory arrest as in the case of botulism

Symptoms may appear within 2 hours of eating the contaminated food or they may begin days later. Generally, the sickness lasts from 1 to 10 days.

It is necessary to seek medical attention in case of the following symptoms:

  • Frequent episodes of vomiting or vomiting blood
  • Severe abdominal cramps
  • Fever higher than 101.5 degrees F (38.6 degrees C)
  • Excessive thirst or dry mouth, little or no urination, dizziness and severe weakness
  • Severe diarrhea for more than 3 days
  • Trouble swallowing or difficulty speaking
  • Double vision
