Symptoms and Signs of Eye Twitching / Blepharospasm

Symptoms and Signs of Eye Twitching / Blepharospasm

Eye twitching can occur for a few hours or days and disappear spontaneously. Anyone can get this condition.

When it is chronic the onset is gradual. Initially blinking may increase in response to bright light, accompanied by sensation of eye irritation. The symptoms progress, affecting the patient’s daily activities likes driving, reading or watching TV. Symptoms are typically exaggerated by stress and improve after sleep.

Some patients learn tricks that may help to abort prolonged periods of eye closure like rubbing the eyelids or talking.

Patients with blepharospasm have normal eyes. The visual disturbance is due solely to the forced closure of the eyelids.
