• Gramicidin is an antibacterial.• It is active against gram-positive organisms.
• It is usually used locally for the treatment of eye, ear or skin infections.
Why is Gramicidin Prescribed? (Indications)
Gramicidin is a mixture of three compounds gramicidins A, B, and C, which are obtained from the soil bacterial species Bacillus brevis.Gramicidin is active against gram-positive bacteria.
It is used in the treatment of superficial eye, ear or skin infection of bacterial origin in combination with other antimicrobials, and sometimes a corticosteroid.
It is too toxic to be used orally or via an injection.
