Why is Secretin Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is a hormone, prescribed for secretion stimulating test in stimulation of pancreatic secretions, stimulation of gastrin secretion in order to identify gastrinoma, pancreatitis or pancreatic cancer.  It inhibits gastric acid secretion.

When should Secretin not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients suffering from acute pancreatitis.

What is the dosage of Secretin?

To Stimulate Pancreatic Secretions- 0.2 mcg/kg body weight by intravenous injection over 1 minute.
To Stimulate Gastrin Secretion - 0.4 mcg/kg body weight by intravenous injection over 1 minute.

How should Secretin be taken?

It comes as a powder (diluted with fluid) for injection, to be administered by a healthcare provider into the vein.

What are the warnings and precautions for Secretin?

• Caution should be exercised in patients with history of inflammatory bowel disease, acute pancreatitis, liver impairment, any allergy, during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
