Prucalopride is a prescription medicine used in adults to treat chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC).
Chronic means long standing. Idiopathic means the cause is unknown.
Prucalopride is a serotonin agonist (acts like serotonin in our body), used for the treatment of chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in adults.
Prucalopride is contraindicated in patients with:
Allergy to Prucalopride or any of the components in Prucalopride
Intestinal perforation (bowel tear)
Obstructive ileus (bowel block)
Crohns disease, ulcerative colitis
Prucalopride is available as tablets containing 1 mg or 2mg Prucalopride.
1. The recommended dose of prucalopride is 2 mg once daily for adults with or without food.
2. The dose is 1mg once daily for adults with renal impairment (creatinine clearance less than 30 mL/min)
Monitor patients for any increase in depression and emergence of suicidal thoughts and behavior. In this case, instruct patients to discontinue prucalopride immediately and contact their doctor.
Gastrointestinal: Abdominal pain, Nausea, , Vomiting , Diarrhea , Abdominal distension, Flatulence (bloating sensation and gas formation)
Nervous system: Headache, Dizziness, Fatigue (tiredness)
Inform your doctor if you have:
Depression, suicidal thoughts or disorders
Pregnant or planning to become pregnant
Breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed
All the drugs you are taking at present
Prucalopride reacts rarely with the following drugs and the interaction is not much significant:
Store prucalopride tablets at room temperature (20° to 25°C).
Tablets must be protected from moisture.
