Why is Irinotecan Prescribed? (Indications)

This medication is an antineoplastic agent, prescribed for colon or rectal cancer, either alone or in combination with other medications. It is an anti-cancer drug. It stops the growth of cancer cells.

When should Irinotecan not be taken? (Contraindications)

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug, and patients with history of severe liver disease, intestinal obstruction and long-lasting intestinal inflammation.

What is the dosage of Irinotecan?

IV- The recommended dose is 125mg/ m2 over 90 minutes infusion, weekly for 4 weeks followed by a gap of 2 weeks.

How should Irinotecan be taken?

This medication is available in the form of liquid to be given intravenously (into the vein) by healthcare providers, once in a week.

What are the warnings and precautions for Irinotecan?

•It may make you dizzy or affect your vision. Do not drive a car or operate machinery while taking this medication.

Skin- Hair loss, sweating, redness or swelling at the injection site.
Musculoskeletal- Back pain, numbness of an arm or leg, one-sided weakness, pain in the groin or lower legs.
Miscellaneous- Cough, flushing, tearing, weight loss, chest pain, fainting, fever, chills and shortness of breath.

Avoid use of laxatives because of the risk of increased diarrhea.
Avoid extravasations.
