About Neurocysticercosis

CYSTICERCOSIS of Brain or Neurocysticercosis is the most common cause of seizures or epilepsy in an adult and the most common parasitic infection of the brain.

CYSTICERCOSIS (SIS-tuh-sir-KO-sis) of Brain or Neurocysticercosis (NEW-row SIS-tuh-sir-KO-sis) is the commonest cause of adult onset seizures or epilepsy. It is the most common parasitic infection of the brain or central nervous system world wide and the most common cause of adult onset epilepsy.

It is caused by the encysted larval stage of the "Pork Tapeworm" (Tenia solium).

Neurocysticercosis is more comon in developing countries and is endemic in Mexico and Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, India, and East Asia.

It has been widely reported in India, more so from the northern parts, and is one of the leading causes of pediatric epilepsy.

Neurocysticercosis is a far more important public health problem than human tape-worm infestations. It is endemic in certain communities and regions of the world due to poor sanitation, use of sewage for fertilizer, and poor breeding methods of the pigs.

Contrary to popular belief neurocystericosis is not exclusive to pork eaters and the incidence among vegetarians is high, especially salad eaters.

Generally tapeworm are parasites that reside in the intestinal tract of human beings. They are long, flat worms that have a head armed with suckers and hooks. Tapeworms can sometimes grow as much as 15 to 30 feet or 10 meters in length and the largest tapeworms grow up to 59 feet or 18 meters. There are variety of these worms that infect human beings and they include:

Beef Tapeworm or Taenia Saginata

Pork tapeworm or Taenia Solium

My wife aged about 41 yrs is suffering from seizure disorder since her childhood from her age of 11 yrs. She was on medication since then on Mazetol 200 [Carbomezapine 200]1.5 Tab. TDS. After our marriage I found getting her seizure initialy once in a six months. We have two children aged anout 15 yrs and 10 yrs. and after our second child seizure occurance intervals increased to once in a two years. Now since last five years there is no seizure occured. And then we visited Neuro phycian for review thinking reducing of drug dose. But when MRI is done, a new case is developed i.e. Neurocysticercosis ? I am told that few worms have been developd. MRI reports are as follows : Impression :- MULTIPLE DISSEMINATED RING ENHANCING AREA IN BOTH CEREBRAL HEMISPHERE RIGHT CEREBELLUM and RIGHT HIGH PARIETAL SUBDURAL SPACE WITH MINIMAL SURROUNDING EDEMA - ? DISSEMINATED GRANULOMA - ? NCC (NEUROCYSTICERCUS) please advice me for a proper treatment and I would like to know is there any life threat.

My son is 18 years old. While playing football he falled down due to convulsion on 12.12.2010 in the field. Immediately he was admitted to the hospital. Later it was found Neurocysticercosis as per CT Scan. Medicine Doctor prescribed truncated Omnacortil medicine along with Eptoin, Zentil etc. And he was referred to Neuromedicine Professor who prescribed Eptoin and Albend. After one month Albend was stopped after two month with CT Scan it was found no ring mark on the brain But Eptoin is still continuing. Doctor advised to continue Eptoin upto two years. My query is Whether this medicine will developed any adverse effect. Pl. advise me What to do?

Concerned about preventive treatment if needing to travel overseas I visited a vitamin shoppe for a natural cure where I purchase my all natural female hormones without a doctors persription. It was recommended that I take two products daily to address the parasites and the eggs of the parasites that hatch later into parasites. The names of the two products were TEA TREE OIL AND FRESH GREEN BLACK WALNUT WORMWOOD COMPLEX. I tried thet products for a month and did not experience any side effects. The cost was $29.00 total. Many foreign countries cure diseases with herbs not pharmaceutical agents. When one get lice in their hair you must treat the lice and their eggs. Parasites are the same. The store representative implied that someone with paraistes in their blood would have to take the products for a long time. More like a year or more. I suggest that many look into these products and understand how they change the blood system not to support the parasites any longer while not causin harm to the body.

My husband's first CT without contrast was followed by a MRI without contrast of the brain. The radiologist indicated possible etiology toxoplasmosis. Should not this radiologist have recommended to repeat the MRI with contrast to confirm not toxoplasmosis verses glioblsatoma. In one year my husband had 19 CT/MRI. Only one MRI was with contrast and it was ordered not to be intrepreted. IS this normal. It says that the MRI with contrast had a radiologist but no intrepretation given since ordered not to be intrepreted. Is that odd? Prior to brain surgery does not the neurosurgeon often order the MRI with contrast?
