Naresh Trehan Reinstated as Chief of Escorts After Weeklong Row

by VR Sreeraman on May 26 2007 6:31 PM

Leading cardiologist Naresh Trehan has been reinstated as executive director of the Escorts hospital here following an out-of-court settlement ending their week-long row, the hospital announced Saturday.

Fortis Healthcare, which has acquired 90 percent stake of the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre (EHIRC), Saturday withdrew the police case it had filed against Trehan and termed his sacking last week as a "result of misunderstanding".

The hospital management had May 18 sacked Trehan, who had established the institute in 1988, and some of his loyal colleagues including a senior doctor from the hospital citing "conflict of interest" - referring to another project the renowned doctor is associated with.

"As a result of misunderstanding, allegations and accusations were made that are now regretted by all. These allegations stand completely and unconditionally withdrawn," the hospital management said in a statement.

"The extremely valuable contribution made by executive director and founder Dr. Naresh Trehan is recognised," the management added.

Expressing happiness over the development, Trehan said things have changed now and he believed that patient care will get due importance at the hospital once again.

"They have withdrawn the police case against me and all the sacked doctors and support staffs have been reinstated. Director (anaesthesia and critical care) Dr. Yatin Mehta has already joined duty," Trehan told IANS.

The management has further said that it would like to ensure a "healthy and smooth work environment where the doctors, nurses and premedical staff will enjoy a good work environment and patient would continue to receive best care".

Managing director S.M. Singh, who had taken the decision to sack doctors, was also praised by the management.
